Meet the Band

Euph / Baritone - Michael Ulliot

Michael is the son of a professional trombone player and arranger but showed absolutely no interest in trombone. He started on euphonium at the age of 11 and was taught by Yorkshire legends Les Lambert and Ted Sutton. They also taught him to smoke non-tipped cigarettes!

michael uMichael joined Rowntrees works band at twelve in the old second section on euphonium and baritone. His first national final at the Royal Albert Hall was when he was fourteen and then again at sixteen under the baton of Grimethorpe’s George Thompson. He was a member of Yorkshire Schools Hammonds Sauce Works under Geoffrey Witham.

His brass band claim to fame is that at the age of sixteen he was part of a band that beat Black Dyke, Grimethorpe and the rest at the Yorkshire qualifiers in Leeds Town Hall, playing baritone with the test piece, “Diadem of Gold”.

Michael then took a short rest from banding for thirty four years (!) and played double bass and bass guitar for a living.

He is now back and enjoying playing again. Michael’s first commitment is to East London Brass but he is a regular friend and deputy with the Enfield band.
